Protests filed over 49er class medal race

QINGDAO, China (AP) The race jury will meet again Monday to rule on three protests lodged against the result of the 49er skiff Olympic sailing medal race.

The Danish team of Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen broke the mast on their boat shortly before the start of the race, rushed back to port and borrowed a skiff from the Croatian team, which failed to make the 10-boat field.

The Danes finished seventh in the medal race yet remained atop the overall standings.

After more than six hours of hearings Sunday, the race jury recessed and will resume Monday, international sailing federation spokesman David Knapman said.

No medals have been awarded because of the protests, one of which was filed on the grounds the team could not start in another country's boat.

The other two protests demanded the race be annulled because it started after the 4:30 p.m. deadline set in Olympic racing rules. The race, scheduled to start at 3 p.m., was delayed because of storms along the course.

If the Danes are disqualified, Spain's Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez, winners of the medal race, would retain the title they won in Athens fours years ago.
